Social media app design project.
PickUp is a social media app that makes it easier to find pickup basketball games, along with creating pickup basketball games. Users can follow other users, create scheduled games, or find games to join near them.
This was a practice project to design a social media app. Using basketball as the main theme was enjoyable having been an avid basketball fan for as long as I can remember.
Design Thinking is a methodology that aims to tackle highly complex problems. The Design Thinking process can be separated into five different areas for success:
In today's fast-paced and interconnected world, people often struggle to find convenient and reliable avenues for practicing their hobbies with others who share their same interests. The absence of a social media platform tailored to the organization and the discovery of pickup basketball games creates a significant challenge for players who are seeking regular play opportunities in their local communities.
This app would provide a seamless and user-friendly experience, empowering basketball enthusiasts to connect, engage, and immerse themselves in the vibrant pickup basketball community. My goal was to make a visually appealing app that is functional and aesthetically appealing to the main two users. This is a concept project and not a fully developed app.
"I need some more organization when making games and finding new players"
"Even when I'm able to organize games with friends, the courts are always full."
When designing the app, looking at other social media apps and their usability was a must. Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter were my main inspirations. An easy-to-read font like SF Pro Display was essential to make readability easy for all users and red was the main color scheme to promote fun, excitement, and fierce.
When making the wireframes, I had to consider the functionality of the app as well as what screens were needed. I created a profile screen, a newsfeed screen, a search screen, a create new game screen, and one other one. Once wireframing was complete It was time to start the UI aspect of the app with the high-fidelity mockups.
With the wireframing complete, all that was left was to add the UI elements. For a color scheme, I chose red, black, and white after showing friends and family options and they reported back that these colors went nicely with the branding image I had in mind. From there, I found a sports-themed font for the logo of the app, and went with a safe serif for the main font choice.
This project was great UI practice as well as practice for designing social media-styled apps. I am incredibly proud of how the final designs turned out and couldn't be more satisfied once the project was complete. I want to thank my friends and family who instilled a love of basketball in me as well as pushed me toward a career in UX/UI design.
Feel free to play with the prototype.
